Stepping out of the Spiritual FOG
For many months, 3 years ago, I was taking a pain medication that caused me to be foggy— I could just tell I wasn’t quite with it. A much more serious form is often described as Chemo Fog by those undergoing cancer treatment.
Spiritually each of us is susceptible to a fogginess— something that keeps us from experiencing God’s presence more clearly in our lives.
For some it is some sort of guilt or shame that doesn’t allow us to clearly go to the throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:16); doesn’t allow us to walk in grace free of condemnation (Romans 8:1).
For some the Fog maybe more like karma or sympathetic magic, i.e. I appease God and He will keep bad things away from me.
For many of us it is pride— thinking things like: “I’m a good person,” “I know I’m doing the right things.” “I’ve accomplished so much by hard work.” “I have a better understanding of the Bible (or I’m more spiritual) than those people.”
For some it is the distractions— already thinking about this afternoon, this week, etc. Difficulty in just being still and knowing that God is God.
True Worship in Spirit and Truth breaks through the FOG. Seeing God as God, thinking on His character, His work… brings to us healing, humbling, encouragement, growth, strength and clarity.
Paul warns about having a form of godliness but deny the power of God. (2 Tim 3:1-5). F.O.G. Form of Godliness. We don’t want a form of godliness, but walk and worship in Spirit and in Truth.
What is your personal FOG that you have to step out of?
